Garage Sale

Neat masks, interesting dolls.

My new Russian books! The second one is a Mark Twain book.

As soon as I saw it I knew I had to have it.

Slight damage repair.

Kelty gettin' to work!

The final piece. Our beautiful new entry way.
Garage sales are America's secret gold mine! You wouldn't believe all the wonderful things people are getting rid of and for dirt cheap! I was pretty surprised at how much I love going to garage sales. It's something new that my dearest very best friend Kelty shared with me. She told me it would be epic and, of course, she was right. This time we went all throughout a neighboring city called Burlingame. Burlingame is a beautiful area and the houses are just gorgeous. I plan on going back soon and taking some b&w film photos real soon.

When I was in school, one of my  film classes required us to use 4x5 cameras, which was a great experience, but also a heavy/ time consuming one. I remember swearing I would never do this again and thank god for digital! However, now I find myself missing film cameras and even wanting to use even bigger cameras, like 8x10 size. For one of my assignments I took pictures of houses in downtown San Jose, a few blocks away from the campus. Where, you wouldn't know it from only driving down main streets in downtown, but there are just the darling-est houses in that area. I really liked some of the photos that I took for that assignment and I would love expand on that series in Burlingame. (When I find the negatives, and get a scanner, I will post some!)

Back to garage sailing! Our first stop was at a Russian Church sale. The sale was hosted by a group of Russian women. We found some cool knick knacks and I also found some really neat Russian books. As soon as I picked up the books the women were really interested if I spoke Russian. When I told them I just like to collect books they smiled and said "Oh interesting," haha. But, then they excitedly told me what all my books were about and the titles. One is a Mark Twain book and another is a famous Russian fairy tale. Garage sales/ estate sales/ church sales etc... are also great because the people selling things are really excited to tell you all about them, which I love. The best kind of sales associates!

After we stopped at an estate sale where we found some interesting dolls and cool Laurel and Hardy masks, that I would have loved to have owned but were out of my price range. The estate sale had some cool things but everything was more than I was willing to spend.

One of our last stops, though, was where we found some real treasures! This place was way up in the hills of Burlingame. Once we got up to the top of the driveway, I saw it instantly. It was a gorgeous metal piece of a fishing dock, complete with tackle shop, boat, and a little fisherman. When I asked the guy how much it was he said, "Well, we got it for about $60 dollars." I though well forget it then but then he said "but, I'll sell it for $15." And that is when it became mine. It needed some minor repairs but other than that it was perfect. Kelty and I hung it up in our entry way with some hooks, for coats and bags, underneath and it is just glorious. I love our new home. It just keeps getting better and better.

Hopefully we can go to a new neighborhood this weekend and I can share our new adventures!
